What is phishing?

Phishing is usually a two-part scam involving email or text messages that contain links to fake or “spoof” websites requesting sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and account details. Once obtained, your personal and financial information can be used to access your account and steal money.

How to recognize a phishing email

Phishing emails are becoming more sophisticated and difficult to distinguish from legitimate emails. By posing as a reputable company, these emails tend to use clever and compelling language, such as an urgent need for you to update your information or communicate with you for your own safety or security.

In the example below, notice:

  • The email address used in this situation appears to be a real email address; however, oftentimes it may not appear to come from Optum®.
  • The content includes a link to update your account.
  • Clicking that link could lead to a fraudulent website - this would be revealed by hovering over the link (not viewable in this screenshot).
  • Oftentimes a phishing email may contain spelling and spacing errors.
  • Ask yourself, does the email seem different from other emails you have received from Optum® in the past? If the answer is yes, do not click on any links and please report the email immediately to assetprotect@optum.com.
